The two of them proceeded into the cavern, the gloom drawing itself over them like a cloak. The calls of insects and rush of distant water faded as they entered, a cold silence that was almost tangible in its presence filling the air in their place. Quil shivered and held the staff out in front of them to light their path, its pale glow sliding across the rocky ground ahead. As they ventured further in and their eyes began to adjust to the dimness, walls which had previously appeared deep grey in the dark unveiled layers of colour, a build-up of thousands of years shot through with a nebula-like brilliance. Further in still, the natural hues and divots in the stone appeared to shift, their shapes gradually becoming less organic and more uniform, forming looping symbols that appeared to dance in Quil’s vision with a pale light all their own.

True to Finn’s word, Reed was waiting at the coach stop when they arrived. A curved wooden structure with oiled fabric pulled across it as rudimentary protection from the elements, it was accompanied by a timetable which confirmed Finn’s statement that coaches only passed Bramblewood twice a day. This did not surprise Quil at all; with no airship landing or train station, it could have been considered some sort of miracle that villages so close to the borders of the Weald received any transportation links at all. They suspected this service may have been publicly funded and running on a shoestring budget.

He drew his hand back and swallowed hard, slowly settling on a decision. Sliding his hands beneath the figure’s body, somewhat awkwardly navigating his way around the wings, he got cautiously to his feet. They were lighter than he expected - bird-boned, like Briar, which felt like an even more apt description given the extra limbs

Ash barked a sardonic laugh. “I only wish I could fly the Bastion alone, then I wouldn’t need to drag all of you along into the hotbed of Alencian politics. But still, perhaps it means you can keep the old girl ready to haul us out of there when I come running back with my arse on fire.”
“Eh, you’re fire-resistant. You’ll be fine.”
“To a degree. By which I mean I once leant my palm on a hot stove and didn’t notice. I think if Emorias decided to cook me I’d find myself fully living up to my name.”

Crownhaven’s structure had never made sense to him, as someone brought up in the vast openness of Elvarest, where cities evolved over distance rather than height; but Elvarest also didn’t hold the dubious position of being the origin of the Cataclysm’s vast and destructive power. He could see much more clearly now how Crownhaven had structured itself as something loosely approximating a pyramid, on the foundations of a humble port town that was never intended to be anything more. A city haphazardly put together beneath a veneer of pioneering progress, capped with the shimmering evidence of wealth that never trickled down, it made Ez’s heart yearn all the more for home.

The sensation of Quil’s magic rolling from their body like waves was so tangible that Tarron winced, but as it passed him, he felt the very walls themselves draw it hungrily into ancient stone. The Tangleweald sensed the blistering heat of Quil’s power, and it wanted it.

“Juniper’s given us the go-ahead. If we can get to the hangar undisturbed, and soon, we might stand a chance of getting in between patrols. Might.”
Ez’s gaze drifted from Ash to Kathra, who was pulling on a jacket of her own and slinging a holdall over her shoulder. In the midst of his conversation with Raine, he had failed to notice that Juniper had quietly left. Immediately, his stomach resumed the churning that it had temporarily halted in the brief period of quiet, and he felt vaguely light-headed.
“OK. So we just need to get to the next tier, get the airship, and get out of here.”
“Simple as that,” Kathra said with a wink. Ez forced a smile back, acutely aware that he might be sick at any moment.

Quil kept their gaze resolutely on the structure ahead, their fingers gripped tightly around the stem of the crystal staff, until their small group reached the solid ground of the jagged peak that the observatory sat upon. A narrow path of cobbled stones coiled through tufted grass and a continued trail of magical lanterns, toward a wide doorway more roughly hewn that that of any seen in the Academy, a marker of much earlier Alencian architecture and the first stake that its people had put into this harsh northern region.
The observatory was a tall, round building perched on its hill like a watching bird, its white walls turned lilac in the approaching night, its domed roof and the walkway circling beneath it painted in hues of bronze and blue. An enormous telescope, trained on the darkening horizon, protruded from the open roof, complex mechanisms barely visible from their position hundreds of feet below. To the side of the structure, a second smaller building stood, with a flat, circular roof, and a platform jutting out from its northern side with a curving glass roof to protect those waiting on it from the worst of the elements; the airship landing.

Vespertine, a male tiefling wizard with purple skin and long purple hair, stands in front of a stained glass window, summoning a spectral owl with one hand. His right arm is missing and he holds his spellbook with a fiery mage hand. Around him, pages loosed from the book swirl around.

The stories said that in its darkest and steepest regions, the Tangleweald fell to the very core of the world itself - the pulsing heart of the planet and the source of all primordial magic within it. The power that had existed long before the Cataclysm had lain waste to so much of the world and gifted mortals with a different kind of magic: a kind that their frail bodies barely knew how to hold.
“It’s probably just a - a little meteorite, or something. You don’t need me to deal with a little rock,” Brandi said breathlessly, having apparently decided a constant stream of oaths and curses was going to be less successful at convincing Tarron to let her go than good old-fashioned excuses.
“A totally normal little rock, just like that bit of bone you’re carrying is just a piece of some dead animal?” Tarron retorted, trying unsuccessfully to keep a snarl out of his voice.
“Alright - fine.” Brandi tripped over a root, swore, and resumed her pace when Tarron did not let go of her arm. “This god of yours - if they’re so special, what’s their name? Why have I never heard of them?”
