Xavier owns an apartment that he rents out at a loss of $1 billion/month. Seeing this success, he decides to make financial commitments to construct $850 billion in new apartments in places nobody wants them. He convinces Ted to leverage everything he owns to help him build the apartments, telling him that once they are built, every human being on Earth will live in them. Ted contributes $100 billion, part of which immediately goes toward paying off Xavier’s $1 billion/month loss. Forbes gives Xavier and Ted a cover feature, likening their building project to God creating the Heavens and the Earth. Many Fortune 500 CEOs take this comparison literally and establish a new religion around Ted and Xavier, with themselves as high priests. Soon, they start a Holy War with the pope, declaring “Ted and Xavier the One True Gods on Earth” and promising to “purge the nonbelievers” in an official press release. They annex, then subsequently demolish, Vatican City, committing another $900 billion dollars to build new apartments in its place. Forbes hails this as “disruptive,” though it’s not clear how Ted and Xavier plan to finance the project.
But as the waters of Lake Powell recede due to climate change and our ancestral sites return, we, as Hopi, have always known that there is no possible way to hold the water on the land in this way. Water is held on the land in the bodies of the animals, in the branches of the trees, in the moisture of the soil of the old-growth forests. Water is held on the land when deer and elk are kept in check by our wolf relatives to allow the vegetation to flourish. Water is held on the land when it is not drilled or blasted from the belly of the Earth to frack and mine and drill. Water is held on the land in our human bodies, connected to the whole, every drop precious. Paahuquatsi — water is life.
The way his attack on the pope functions best for Mr. Trump, like so much of the ragebait with which he pollutes our collective consciousness, is by pulling attention back to him so that we talk about him within terms that he has set. Lewis said it's more likely that the strike was the result of an error. Satellite images show that the school and clinic buildings were both once part of the base. The school was separated from the base by a wall between 2013 and 2016. The clinic was walled off between 2022 and 2024. Lewis believes it's possible American military planners had not updated their target sets. "There are thousands of targets across Iran, and so there will be teams in the United States and Israel that are responsible for tracking those targets and updating them," he said. "It's possible that the target didn't get updated." The Pentagon did not immediately respond to NPR's request for additional information about the strike.
