"Some readers of this monograph will be curious about other
details of its production. It was word-processed on an AT&T 3B2 computer, operated by UNIX System V Release 2.0.5, in the Department of Classics at The Johns Hopkins University and printed on an Imagen laser printer. The text-formatting program was troff. Since the original form of this program did not provide for automatically numbered footnotes, different macros have been developed in different places to overcome this deficiency. (A macro combines basic features of an existing program-in this case, troff-to perform a specific func-tion.) At Hopkins, the footnote macro does not treat the superscript number in the text and the immediately preceding character as a single unit. For this reason, the superscript number sometimes annoyingly appears at the beginning of a line. Another typographical oddity needs explanation, too. The Greek font used in this monograph does not include breathing marks. The opening and closing single quotation marks of the Roman font serve as substitutes. Despite these and other, less visible difficulties, the possibility of retaining control over the typography of this monograph has been one of the gratifications of working with University Press of America. Such control as I could muster was increased in many ways by Steven Klenda (G. W. C. Whiting School of Engineering of The Johns Hopkins University, '89), an expert in troff."
