The main reason we host so many data centres is that it saves them petawatt hours of energy to do their work in a country that stays cool even while Europe roasts — so why do we, like absolute suckers, sell them cut-rate electricity without demanding they build the renewable capacity first?

You can't, quite rightly, build a block of flats here without knowing there is adequate water, electricity and road capacity but sure go on ahead and destabilise the national grid by drawing a couple of hundred megawatts 24/7 without ever questioning where it comes from.
