I buy cherries when they’re in season, which does add the step of pitting them, but I have a nice little cherry pitter that makes it fast and easy. The yellow berries are cape gooseberries, which my local store always has stocked, often cheaper than blackberries and blueberries.

The little black cat at the bottom is Josie Jelly Bean, who likes to flop and roll in this spot to demand belly rubs as I’m walking out, ensuring that someday she WILL get stepped on and I’ll probably fall and break a hip or something stupid like that. 😅

Lake Michigan, Chicago - 4/30/25
The organization I work for, Northwest Special Education Cooperative, provides school psychologists for 11 school districts in our three county area. Fully staffed, we would have SIX psychologists. We currently employ ONE full time psych. It’s not an exaggeration to say that we are grossly understaffed. We were so fortunate to be able to partner with Northern Illinois University two years ago to apply for a grant to train current teachers to become school psychologists. We were so relieved when the grant was approved and we knew that in five years we would be able to train three people. We were notified yesterday that our grant was being canceled because it is “in conflict with the current administration’s priorities and policy preferences.” I have spent the last 20 years of my life supporting students mental health and academic growth. If you are not aware, school psychologists provide mental health services, but also are instrumental in identifying children with disabilities and helping them get the supports they need to be successful in school. We work with students, families, and school staff to support students needs in multiple facets of their education and of their lives. I have seen firsthand how greatly our students and school staff need school psychologists.
