Microalgae underpin some of the ocean’s most iconic symbioses, most notably with reef-building corals. Yet, sailing the high seas is a new symbiosis. Using a series of advanced imaging techniques, we provide the first look at this previously undescribed partnership. Despite convergence of the cnidarian–algal relationship, unique morphological localization indicates an independently evolved, biologically novel endosymbiotic strategy different from all known symbioses. Amazingly, these sailing cnidarians seem analogous to an autonomous greenhouse fueling its reproductive medusoid stages for life in the open ocean.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ahead of a storm that will bring D.C. a projected 5-10 inches or more of snow this weekend, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) reminded D.C. residents that her provision in the Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill allows sledding on Capitol Hill. Capitol Police confirmed this morning that the Capitol grounds will be open to sledders of all ages. “The West Front of the Capitol is widely known as one of the best sledding hills in D.C.’s high-density urban environment,” Norton said. “That is why I get a provision included annually in the Legislative Branch Appropriations Bill directing the Capitol Police to allow sledding on Capitol grounds. With a major snowfall projected this weekend, children and their parents should be able to enjoy one of the best hills in D.C.” “Sledding is a simple childhood joy, and in the middle of winter, it is the least we can allow our children.” Norton got her provision included in the bill after the Capitol Police began prohibiting sledding several years ago.

Plymouth Rock is a boulder in Plymouth, Massachusetts, which was claimed to have been at the site where the Mayflower Pilgrims landed to found Plymouth Colony in December 1620. The Pilgrims did not refer to Plymouth Rock in any of their writings; the first known written reference to the rock dates from 1715 when it was described in the town boundary records as "a great rock".[2] The first documented claim of Plymouth Rock as the landing place of the Pilgrims was made by 94-year-old Thomas Faunce in 1741, 121 years after the Pilgrims arrived in Plymouth.[3][4
