Text: Today in Resistory from Rebellious Resources. 1979: Lilly Ledbetter begins work at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. By the time she retired in 1998, she is making 14& to 29% less than all 15 of her male coworkers at the plant. Ledbetter filed a claim with the EEOC based on gender pay discrimination. Her case lost due to being outside the 180-day statute of limitations; the LLFPA amended this for future cases. Quote: "This fight, which began as my own, is now our fight - a fight for the fundamental American values that make our country great... what we lose can't be measured in dollars," Lilly Ledbetter, Women's Equality Activist.

Text: International Holocaust Memorial Day, commemorating the 11 million victims of Nazi Germany's "Operation T-4" and "Final Solution" genocide campaigns from 1939 to 1945. 1933: Nazi gov't institutes the Law for the Preventions of Progeny with Hereditary Diseases, based on U.S. eugenics laws, which forced the sterilization of people with disabilities. Propaganda called PWDs "life unworthy of life" and "useless eaters". 1939: Hitler launches Operation T-4, a campaign of "mercy death" that was really murder. 1940-41: 70,000 Austrian and German people with disabilities were killed; these were t4est cases to see how society-at-large would react. "Euthanasia centers" became the training grounds for SS officers that would expand the genocide at death camps across Europe. T-4 was the first step in the Third Reich's "race hygiene" program. By the time WWII ended and camps were liberated, an estimated 275,000+ people with disabilities had been killed.

TEXT: Today in Financial History from Rebellious Resources - November 2, 1903: St. Luke's Penny Savings Bank opens. Maggie Lena Walker chartered St. Luke's Penny Savings Bank in Richmond, VA, becoming the first Black woman to charter a bank. She was the first Black woman to serve as bank president; several women served on the bank's board. Juvenile Branch for the Independent Order of St. Luke taught financial planning to its young members. St. Luke's was established in the Jackson Ward area of Richmond, VA, one of the country's many so-called Black Wall Streets. St. Luke's later merged with other financial institutions, but would remain a Black-owned bank serving members of the community until it was sold in 2005.

Quick Facts: The U.S. has 70 million active 401(k) accounts totalling $9T in assets; investors under age 60 can contribute up to $70,000 per year, and investors 50-plus can contribute up to $77,500, including employer match. Traditional 401(k) contributions come from gross (pre-tax) earnings, reducing your taxable income for the year. However, withdrawals will be taxed at the time of distribution. Roth 401(k) contributions come from your net earnings, which have already been taxed. Therefore, withdrawals will not be taxed at the time of distribution. 401(k) plans are just one way of saving for retirement, and they may or may not be the right investment for your financial goals.
