Nilay Patel, the editor in chief of the technology website The Verge, has warned publishers for years that they would face "Google Zero," a moment when traffic from Google would plummet to nothing. "For publishers, Google Zero is already here," he said. "It wasn't until AI Mode arrived that people could see that the slow creep was about to hit a tipping point."

On a business level, your problem with TikTok is this: Platforms exist to erode institutions like CBS News. You cannot solve your problems with improved distribution on TikTok. The things that work on television for 60-year-olds do not work on TikTok for 14-year-olds, first of all. But more importantly, TikTokers monetize their channels by directly integrating advertising and brands into their content, a strategy in immediate conflict with the values and ethics of a storied news organization like CBS News. Even if you somehow manage to crack TikTok’s algorithm, you still won’t make enough revenue to survive without trashing the very soul of the institution you’re purporting to save.
The trajectory over the last three years has been incredible. The LLMs of today have evolved in many ways too. We are constantly evolving it. To me, it’s like asking, can computers get us to the way—? The von Neumann architecture is still what powers most computers today, but he won’t recognize the modern one of our TPU pods. Or maybe he would. There’s still a lot of commonality to it. The underlying technology keeps evolving so profoundly. I look at every year we have had major breakthroughs. I mean, you just saw us demo in Antigravity an ability to prompt and create an operating system. It’s very dangerous for Google to be able to make new operating systems. We’ll have to make sure we don’t token max on creating... I’ll give you that. It’s fair, but that is the power of what these things are doing, right? There are the top mathematicians in the world, top physicists in this world who are interacting with these tools and using them in important ways, but can these tools fundamentally make novel scientific discoveries on their own? Not yet.
I think you all know that I've always felt the nine most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the Government, and I'm here to help. A great many of the current problems on the farm were caused by government-imposed embargoes and inflation, not to mention government's long history of conflicting and haphazard policies. Our ultimate goal, of course, is economic independence for agriculture, and through steps like the tr reform bill, we seek to return farming to real farmers. But until we make that transition, the Government must act compassionately and responsibly. In order to see farmers through these tough times, our administration has committed record amounts of assistance, spending more in this year alone than any previous administration spent during its entire tenure. No area of the budget, including defense, has grown as fast as our support for agriculture.
There’s what you’re saying here, and then there’s this quote from Byron Allen about what BuzzFeed is going to be. I’m just going to read it to you, and I’m hoping you can explain to me how this will work. Here’s Byron Allen describing why he’s buying BuzzFeed: “As of this moment, with the power of AI, BuzzFeed is officially chasing YouTube to become another premier free video streaming service.” How are you going to do that? I think one thing that is pretty exciting about working with Byron is that there are more assets, more resources, and more capabilities to do things that we just couldn’t do on our own. I don’t want to give away too much, but he’s doing a lot of things in these wholly-owned businesses that he has. He is in the home with Local Now, a connected TV app. He’s doing a huge amount of production with his studios for making content. There are conversations, deals, partnerships, and things that he’s able to access. So I think what that means is you’ll have to wait and see. But putting together pieces and combining that with new technology and making something that doesn’t exist is why I’m so excited about this deal. What would YouTube be if it started today? What would YouTube be if it were something that was created in the world of GenAI? I think it would be pretty different. It might not be what every listener is imagining. It’s certainly not just making a bunch of AI slop videos or something like that, which I think is the thing that people jump to. But there are different ways that creators could make, play, and share. We have a lot of stuff to work out and a lot of stuff to build, but I’m excited about combining a lot of new capacity that we didn’t have before to build things that seemed out of reach in the past.
= On Vyro, another clipping service launched by MrBeast, Perplexity launched a campaign in early April centered around Joe Rogan's use of AI. (Perplexity is a sponsor of Rogan's show.) Clippers were instructed to make content based on Rogan discussing Al with guests like Bradley Cooper and Johnny Knoxville, with the Al company specifically mentioned. The campaign ran across Instagram and TikTok, paying $1.20 per one thousand views on a video - and came with more requirements. Accounts were required to have more than 10,000 followers to submit clips, and all posts were to include #PoweredByPerplexity and #sponsored (many clipping campaigns have no disclosures that the content is paid). Reached via email, Perplexity distanced itself from the clipping company, with spokesperson Jesse Dwyer saying Perplexity "has no knowledge" of Vyro and "takes any unauthorized use of the Perplexity name or logo very seriously." When asked to confirm Perplexity had not run or authorized clipping campaigns, Dwyer stopped responding to The Verge. Vyro directed me to Evangelist, a platform that connects brands with clip farms, but the company declined to comment. If clips really are the standard for marketing — a tool that everyone uses, that is at this point old news - why the secrecy?

Once you start seeing the world as a bunch of databases, it's a small jump to feeling like you can control everything if you can just control the data.

Among the guests was Todd Blanche, the acting attorney general. Mr. Blanche oversees the Justice Department, whose antitrust division is set to review the Warner Bros. acquisition. More than half of Gen Z-ers living in the United States use generative artificial intelligence regularly, but their feelings about the technology are souring, according to a new survey released on Thursday by Gallup, the Walton Family Foundation and GSV Ventures, a venture capital firm that works in education technology. The percentage of respondents ages 14 to 29 who said they felt hopeful about A.I. declined sharply since last year, down to 18 percent from 27. Young adults' excitement about artificial intelligence dropped, too, and nearly a third of respondents indicated that the technology made them feel angry.
We talk to developers all the time here at The Verge. They’re like, “Our entire job is different.” The world has changed. The market has cracked open. Something is going to happen there. Then, downstream of that, you can say, “Well we hired a bunch of engineers to build us business process automation. Maybe we get way more value out of those engineers and we get way more automation.” There’s something in the enterprise that’s going to happen with AI, that feels like I understand the value. Do you see any consumer applications of that scale beyond just telling Alexa to buy me shoes. Quite honestly, I don’t yet, apart from Google Search getting a lot weirder over the past two years. I don’t have any great examples yet. You’re right. You are seeing some horizontal areas in the enterprise that are consistent across almost every company, like coding. Customer service is one that everybody’s working. You start to see some emerging horizontal use cases in legal. We’re seeing a lot of use cases in our people organization, too. I think those are pretty standard. Everybody’s at least aware of those opportunities. People are at different stages on the journey. But, I’m not the consumer expert by any stretch. We’re purely B2B, so that’s where I spend all my time. If I saw it, I would have probably read it on something you published. We’re looking for it every day. The reason I’m asking is because I think this relates to why I started out asking about data centers in space. I’ve heard [Google CEO] Sundar Pichai say variations on this idea. Without the big consumer application that everybody understands and can see the benefit of, putting the data center in the backyard is becoming an increasingly harder sell. The power requirements, the water requirements — which I know are controversial and often argued about — just the energy, resources, and requirements of the data centers are making them unpopular.

And so I think a similar thing, it’s, yeah, of course… Every big vendor that’s trying to protect their entrenched things, whether it’s Microsoft with their new bundle where they’re trying to lock everyone in, they’re going to say, “It all has to be on our thing, and you can’t use other agents against our agents because our agents are better because they have our data and our workflow.” And ultimately, it’s going to be customers that demand change, and if there’s so much monopolistic lock-in, then we have to rely on regulators to come in and fix it. Well, I do think this is history that you’ve just made. You’re the first CEO of a multi-billion-dollar enterprise software company to advocate for vigorous antitrust enforcement at Decoder, so I’m just going to hold that close to my heart. I do think- If the market doesn’t work, customers can’t force the choice. I do think the pre-Reagan antitrust environment that led to IBM being unbundled is very different from today, but we will set that aside. But I did impress you with my historical reference. It was very good. Again, the reason I didn’t answer your question correctly is that I’m very surprised that you went to antitrust. That doesn’t usually happen on the show. Isn’t there going to be just some weird pricing war in the middle of all that, where Microsoft says, “Sure, let your other vendor’s agent into 365. We’re just going to charge you a massive access fee to do it.” And... Yeah, I think that’s very likely. Yeah.

I experienced South by Southwest through the magic of Instagram and TikTok. You had a suite there at South by Southwest. I looked at some of the videos. The caption on one of the Instagram carousels… I’m just going to read you the caption. This is from the Superhuman suite at South by Southwest. There were a lot of talks there. The summary of the talks was, “AI can’t replace human creativity, empathy, or emotion. It won’t take all of our jobs, but it will reshape how we work. And in the AI era, taste and judgment are more valuable than ever.” Valuable on what metric? Is it dollars? Valuable on every metric. Specifically dollars. Dollars are what I pay my mortgage in. Is it dollars? I’m sorry, I didn’t understand the question. If my “taste and judgment are more valuable than ever,” but it’s also infinitely replicable and you think I need a new business model or every creator needs a new business model or– Sorry, you made a big leap from that. How do I make more dollars? If my “taste and judgment are more valuable than ever,” where do the extra dollars come from? As an expert, you have a trade you make on the internet. The idea is that when you put content out there, myself included, you hope people use it. You want to refer to other people's content. You want people to link to you. You really, really hope they attribute you when they do. When somebody uses your content, should they attribute you? Of course. And to attribute you, you have to use your name. There's a different line which is, should people be able to impersonate you? And I think that is a very different standard. And we saw the lawsuit. Respectfully, we believe the claims are without merit. The idea that the feature is impersonation is quite a big stretch. Every mention was very clearly, "This is inspired not only by this person, but also inspired by a specific work from this specific person, with a clear attributed link to get back to them."
