This is the opening scene of the play, which begins with one of LAIBA’S book reports. LAIBA My book report is on Ender’s Game. The book is about a boy named Ender who goes to outer space to train at a Battle School to defeat an alien race attacking humanity called the Buggers. Spoiler alert, Ender commits genocide against the Buggers. Oh I forgot to say it’s a kid’s book! Ender’s a really sad little kid. Like, really sad. The principal of the Battle School, Colonel Graff, basically sets up Ender to be really lonely so he becomes like a killing machine. Ender hurts a bunch of other kids, but on accident, and Colonel Graff kind of sets him up to do it. And Ender is really smart and powerful but it weighs on him and he feels guilty and like he’s the only person like him in the whole universe, which he is. And that’s, uh, a really relatable part of the book for some people. Some specific people. Yeah. But here’s the thing, stay with me now, we’re going to go at lightning speed, haha, get it? The speed of light! Ender is like super, ultra, extremely gay. He’s like, the gayest little boy at the Battle School. He kisses his friend Alai and he fights boys naked in the shower (he kills one, but that’s like part of it and he doesn’t know he kills him and it’s a whole thing but Mr. Pratt said I can only take five minutes tops or I will fail this project again, so excuse me if I gloss over some things!) and yeah, he’s in love with his friend Alai. And he and Alai have a lot in common, like they both come from repressed religious backgrounds. Ender’s Mormon and Alai’s Muslim, and like, you’d think I’d relate to Alai but Alai isn’t lonely, everyone loves him. And Ender feels like no one loves him. But Ender and Alai have a special love for each other that transcends friendship. Ender is lonely because he’s being isolated, yeah, and it feels like the whole universe is against him, but he’s also lonely because he’s super freaking sorry super DUPER queer.
