(A) Classical method of identifying hGC events. Given a four-taxon tree consisting of two model diploid progenitors (D1 and D2) and the two subgenomes of an allopolyploid (P1 and P2), categories of SNP patterns were used to infer patterns of hGC. Blue circles: SNPs in the D1 diploid; red circles: SNPs in the D2 diploid. First, SNPs that can reliably differentiate one diploid/subgenome clade from the other (homoeoSNPs; gray box) are identified. Between consecutive homoeoSNPs, if multiple SNPs are consistent with the pattern where subgenome P1 has overwritten P2 (blue box), or vice versa (red box), then gene conversion is inferred. Importantly, however, there are other evolutionary forces that may generate these SNPs patterns (e.g., autapomorphic SNPs in either diploid terminal branch) that are not accounted for in this model. (B) Our model for investigating rates of homoeologous gene conversion and homoeologous exchanges. Given a seven-taxon tree consisting of an outgroup (OUT; used to polarize SNPs as ancestral or derived), subgenomes of an allotetraploid (P1 and P2, respectively), two diploid progenitor species (D1 and D2, respectively), and an outgroup to each of the diploid/subgenome clades (D1o and D2o, respectively), we define homoeoSNPs as those SNP sites where either the (D1, D1o, P1) or the (D2, D2o, P2) clade exclusively have derived SNPs. SNP sites that are potentially the result of hGC (Diagnostic + SNPs) are highlighted in dark blue (P1 overwrites P2) or dark red (P2 overwrites P1).

Column matrix gas concentrations were controlled by mixing cylinder gas with UZA using MFCs and delivering the custom gas mixture through the columns from bottom to top (dotted orange line). Probe sampling flow rates were controlled precisely using three MFCs to ensure that flow in and out of the probe was balanced (probe flow (blue lines) + dilution flow (red lines) is equal to total flow to analyzer (black lines)). Column headspace (atmospheric pressure) and control gas bypass (positive pressure) were controlled by MFCs at two points (dilution, total flow to analyzer), forcing the probe flow as a makeup flow (probe flow is equal to total flow minus dilution flow).

Dorymyrmex bicolor engage in more social interactions than D. insanus.
