I bought the hardcover edition of Hello Sunshine when it released, and the only reason I could not finish it in one sitting is that I spent so much time marveling at how smart the artwork and page layouts are, and contemplating the complex themes the book explores. I'm turning 32 this year, and while I absolutely adore this book right now, there is no doubt in my mind that it would have been monumental to have in my hands as a child, that I would have read it over and over and over again. I do not have schizoaffective disorder like Alex does in Hello Sunshine, but I did suffer from other conditions that left me feeling alien and totally alone as I grew up. I can imagine how much this book must mean to children and young adults who have, or will develop, schizoaffective disorder. Seeing oneself and our loved ones represented so compassionately in the art we engage with is profoundly important. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for publishing Hello Sunshine. I will be among the first in line for whatever Keezy Young is cooking up next.
