Congresswoman Simon Votes Against Republican Foreign Aid Budget Bill “Today I voted against H.R. 8595, the National Security, Department of State, and Related Programs Appropriations Act, 2027. “A year after abruptly shuttering USAID and gutting the State Department - Republicans continue to make devastating and deadly cuts to foreign aid and diplomatic programs. This bill includes steep cuts to global health and diplomatic programs, which will undoubtedly lead to even higher rates of poverty, malnutrition, and death. “The President says he is interested in making our nation "stronger, safer, and more prosperous," yet everything he has done in the past year runs counter to this promise. Starting an illegal and unwanted war in Iran does not make us safer. Ceding America's voice at international institutions like the United Nations and cutting off resources for diplomacy does not make us stronger. Prohibiting funding for worldwide climate initiatives does not make us more prosperous.
The Constitution is clear. If you are born in America, you’re an American citizen, period. Today, the Supreme Court reaffirmed what we knew to be true: Donald Trump’s birthright citizenship executive order was an illegal effort to strip citizenship from first-generation Americans and pull them into his deportation terror machine. Hate and fear did not win today, and they will not win tomorrow - with hope and joy, the fight continues.
Congresswoman Simon Votes Against Republican Budget Reconciliation Bill, Opposes $70 Billion for Violent Immigration Enforcement “Today, I voted against the Republican reconciliation bill, which would provide $70 billion more for the Trump Administration’s immigration enforcement machine. “A budget is a reflection of our morals. The first reconciliation bill Republicans passed last year — the Big, Ugly, Cruel Bill— was cruelty as policy. It gave the Department of Homeland Security over $170 billion dollars, while making the largest cuts to SNAP in history and gutting our healthcare system.
While there is still more work to do to bolster reliable, safe, and affordable public transit, I am excited about the progress in the BUILD America 250 Act to reauthorize critical surface transportation programs. I am especially grateful to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee leadership for the bill's inclusion of provisions from legislation I have sponsored, including a provision from my RIDER Safety Act to make the hiring of transit support specialists an eligible operating expense for Urbanized Area Formula Grants.  I am also grateful for the inclusion of language to permanently codify the Federal Transit Administration's pilot program for Transit-Oriented Development, based on my legislation, the Connecting Communities Through Transit Planning Act. Finally, the bill includes language directing the Government Accountability Office to assess paratransit software and technologies to improve the quality of life for paratransit users, something I've advocated for in my Same-Day Paratransit Innovation Act. These provisions reflect meaningful progress toward a more accessible, efficient, and people-centered transportation system. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to build on this foundation.
