Dear Premier Danielle Smith Tonight in Ottawa, you stated: “In Alberta, we are also putting an end to the era of wokeism.” What exactly do you mean by “wokeism”? Please define it clearly. Are you referring to awareness of prejudice and unfairness? To empathy, respect, and open-mindedness? To recognizing racism, inequality, and social injustice when they exist? To valuing education, evidence, and science? Because when many people hear the word “woke,” they hear compassion. They hear concern for marginalized people, fairness in opportunity, and basic human decency. So why are you so eager to frame those values as something negative? Why are you proud of declaring an end to what many people see as kindness, inclusion, fairness, and compassion for others? Values that are basic Christian tenets. Using “wokeism” as a vague political insult means attacking the deeply rooted Albertan values of empathy and social responsibility. Your flippant use of this word is divisive and deeply disappointing.
