Sadly most of the ones in Europe don't let you take stuff now, for various reasons including electrical safety or in the case of one I visited on the weekend, staff intimidation by organised gangs (e.g give us good stuff to look at first or we attack you).
i mean... lying to what end lol. Like to perpetuate the big free crt conspiracy? Just to screw with people? I think some people are living too deep within their main character syndrome and just assume because they've never seen it personally it doesn't exist. They need to get a grip on reality.

It's not "Free" but I got my widescreen CRT for $10, which is as good as free!
They're just sitting there 🥹all alone...
in my country you can no longer find CRTs anywhere. maybe some of those people live in countries like that.
