I love how he's watching them and they're very aware of his presence but they never say anything to each other besides regular customer-waiter stuff. This movie is slightly devastating. Middle-aged blather and then bam, out of nowhere, over and over again, these observations about the hollowness of modern life that are crushingly true —and prescient. You'll be shouting at the screen "you have no idea! Wait til you get internet! Then you'll really know phoniness and *constant* performativity and spiritual death." Gotta go figure out what it means to not live automatically now. Wish me luck

Michael Sharp The Invite 2026 PRO The Invite. Watched Jul 15, 2026 This should've been called THE MENU but I guess that title was taken... As hard as I've laughed in the theater in a very long time. Like, wheezing. Olivia Wilde is so good at playing a certain kind of aspirational upper middle class white lady that I fear the incredible facial and gestural and body-language nuance will be invisible to, say, potential Oscar voters. Like, it's incredible with she does with her role, how she pulls it back from caricature over and over again. Her yearning for ... SOMETHING ... unknown even to her ... is palpable, painful, hilarious. Her character is trying So Hard to seem like the cool person she wishes she were ... relatable. Everyone is good, but her performance really stunned me.

Besides, the truest truth of this World Cup is that Cape Verde was the team that won the tournament, because it was the feel-good story Americans thought was their domain. It isn't. Americans either win or condemn the losers, and that's because hype is the enemy, not hope. We may be too jaded for hope; that's a case-by-case matter. But we are definitely too susceptible to hype and disinterested in changing. That's the lesson.

Michael Sharp PRO Straight Time 1978 'STRAIGHT TIME' * Watched Jul 5, 2026 Had no idea what I was getting into. All I thought was "cool, a Harry Dean Stanton movie I haven't seen." I did not expect this movie to go so hard.! did not expect Dustin Hoffman to go so hard. I did not expect Kathy Bates or Theresa Russell or Gary Fucking Busey or the GOAT M Emmet Walsh. This movie looks like it's going one way and then you're on the highway and Bam off it goes in a totally different direction... and it's exciting. And sometimes you almost forget it can't last. He can't last. You root for him. But ... yeah, he is who he is. I love that the unlikely love story at the heart of the movie never rings false-Russell plays the hell out of her role, sweet and kind of naive but also tough and realistic. It's a balancing act and she pulls it off. This might be my favorite Hoffman performance. Ever. Dude has range. And he's ACTING for sure but damned if his Max Dembo, despite all the mayhem, doesn't feel like a completely believable person. (Criterion Channel, HD Stanton collection, 7-5-26)
