I'm lucky enough that most of my stories take place in the fictitious version of my hometown. but even at that, I spend a lot of time researching a place when adding it to my work's universe. I'll visit the place in person if I can and try to imagine how the scene, characters and story would unfold there. then, i invent up small details about the place to help the reader grasp the vibe or plot flow better.
