There were layers to darkness. Some sat near the surface, where peeling away one last obstruction—eyelids, cloth—invited a flood of colour and clarity. Others burrowed deep, shrouded in so many membranes that shadow fed upon itself, bloating and smothering. Solidifying. It was into one such absolute darkness that Sandhrin emerged, disoriented. Panic stole his breath; his gut jerked. Frantic, he flung his hands wide for purchase and met furs—too fine for his own bed, too soft for the Infirmary. He tried to open his eyes again and again, only to be reminded that they were open.
