Specifically: i. that areas to be protected focus on its lower productivity farmland (classified as very poor, poor and moderate agricultural land), restoring all of its Sites of Special Scientific Interest to favourable condition, and restoring its fenland peat. ii. that the Church Commissioners works to practically and financially support tenant farmers to make full use of the new income streams available to them to take the lead in nature restoration.’

Politicians, opinion-formers and civil society from across the world braved the scorching temperatures of a record-breaking heatwave in London last week for two very different events. At least 75,000 people attended London Climate Action Week, while about 4,000 gathered for the Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) conference. At the latter, delegates sweltered in the heat for two days before the engineers fixed the air conditioning in the Olympia conference centre in west London. Ignoring the writing on the wall, Donald Trump’s energy secretary, former fossil fuel executive Chris Wright, called Britain’s net zero policies “a tragic mistake” and Kemi Badenoch lambasted Ed Miliband as a “villain”. There was no relief for those planning on attending a Climate Action Week panel discussion at the London School of Economics on how cities and infrastructure must be adapted to deal with extreme heat. It was cancelled due to the extreme heat, rather demonstrating the point.
