won't lie, this took me a few reads before I understood that I could *cancel* my reservation up to 24h ahead of time, but I won't get any money back (right?)

I read it as you will get your money back if you cancel at least 24h out, but not if you cancel after.

I read it that you won't get your money back if you cancel early, but if you cancel after the deadline then you might be charged even more
