NY Blood Center is a community, nonprofit blood bank founded in 1964 which supplies blood and transfusion-related medical services to hundreds of hospitals in NY and the greater Northeast. Come hydrated 💧 and with a photo ID 🪪. It will also help to wear a shirt with either short sleeves or ones that are easily rolled up. Join us at Ridgewood Commons this Wednesday June 24th @ 7PM for a free screening of "Party Monster" (2003). Reviled in its time for turning a real-life tragedy into a glittering pile of camp, today the movie time-capsules a wild moment of queer abandon and genderf*ckery in the early 90s club kid culture. The story follows a small town gay played by Macaulay Culkin (of Home Alone fame) as he makes it big in NYC's nightlife. Seth Green, Marilyn Manson, and Natasha Lyonne round out the cast of straight actors performing over-the-top queer characters. And if you hate the idea of straight people caricaturing us, we hear you. There’s still something to love about this movie, though. Hear us out. Today, Fox News and friends are engaging in a dour-faced culture crusade against us. They want to make queer people villainous again. But Party Monster? Back in 2003? It reveals that even when straight people think we're despicable, they also think we're a lot of fun. That is (and forever will be) our one greatest power in the straight-queer dynamic. So come join us as we gaze into this funhouse reflection of queer culture. There's a lot to learn, I promise. Ridgewood Commons 585 Woodward Avenue, NYC/Queens Ridgewood Commons events are donation based, no one turned away for lack of funds. Free Pools tickets are useful as RSVPs, and to help prepare for events, but are not required and will not be checked at the event. We have no paid staff, but do pay rent - donations and subscriptions keep the lights on and fridges running.
NYC Migrant Solidarity is proud to present Mercado Caracol: Saturday, June 20th, 3-9pm at Ridgewood Commons (585 Woodward Ave). Come spend an afternoon with us: food, music, dance, and community. We will also be holding a raffle in support of the two families who had their loved ones abducted by ICE last Friday, June 13th, in Ridgewood. 📚Continuing with our political education workshops, we will have a presentation on how to identify ICE, as well as a discussion about why there has been an escalation in the targeting of migrants. 📩A note for folks interested in vending: please do not DM us asking to vend. "Alborz, We Climb Mountains" chronicles the storied history of Alborz High School, tracing the institution’s evolution from its 1873 origins as an American missionary school to becoming the country’s powerhouse of modern education. Through archival footage and personal interviews, Sepehri captures the school’s profound impact both within Iran and across its diasporas, amidst the backdrop of a shifting political landscape. Ridgewood Commons hosts community dinners every Sunday (see schedule at http://ridgewoodcommons.nyc). They're typically not listed as withfriends events. However this Sunday dinner will be a fundraiser for the Lebanese Red Cross, and it seemed prudent to allow people an easy method to donate, even if you're not local and cannot attend the dinner. 100% of funds donated via this event link will be conveyed to the LRC. Or if local, come and join us! As many of you know, more than a fifth of the Lebanese community has been displaced, its agricultural land is being subject to ecocide, with over 250 casualties and thousands injured just yesterday and all hospitals are overwhelmed with patients. Since Lebanon needs help in all ways right now we are inviting you to a vegetarian Lebanese dinner to raise funds for the Lebanese Red Cross, a 100% volunteer led national organization which is responsible for Emergency medical services, social work services, and crisis response. Come redirect your tax $$ to where they ought to be going! The organizer of this dinner worked with the LRC for 5 years. If attending in person, you can ask any questions about the org, or more ways you can help in general regarding Lebanon. We'll also continue our discussions on permacomputing and ways we can hack existing devices to extend their longevity and limit our own production of e-waste. Devices are planned to become obsolete, and it is our job as soft(ware) custodians to maintain, cultivate, and care for these old and forgotten tools. This Wednesday at Ridgewood Comnons A screening of the documentary "1971" (2014) The story of how the Citizeas Commission to Investigate the FBI exposed COINTELPRO 12/10 7-830pm 585 Woodward Ave COINTELPRO, short for counter intelligence program, waged war on the American Left. Anti-communist paranoia grew in the 50s to encompass widespread surveillance and sabotage of progressive and radical social movements in the United States. From the letter sent to MLK pressuring him to kill himself to the assassination of Fred Hampton, the FBI is responsible for many horrors. As we have seen from the treatment of activists in the Green Scare, anti-fascist action, the Movement for Black Lives, and Indigenous rights and land defense, the playbook was never discarded. But how did the public find out about all this? The documentary 1971 (2014) by Johanna Hamilton tells the story of The Citizen’s Commission to Investigate the FBI, as they called themselves. A handful of activists from the anti-war movement broke into an FBI office on a hunch, and stole over 1,000 classified documents. The FBI’s investigation into the burglary ended in 1976 after the 5-year statute of limitations ended. For almost 40 years they kept their silence and held solidarity with each other. In conjunction with https://signalsrising.org/ In this hands-on workshop, participants will build a low-power mesh-communication nod. These nodes are ideal for deployment in areas with limited infrastructure — for emergency communications, community networks, or off-grid connectivity. Participants should have some familiarity with electronics and microcontrollers (e.g., soldering, flashing firmware) — but we’ll walk through everything step-by-step, so intermediate skill levels are welcome. Ideal for community-tech groups, local disaster-prep teams, NGOs operating in remote areas, or educational groups working on connectivity challenges. Why This Workshop Matters In many underserved or remote regions, traditional communication infrastructure (cell towers, internet) may be unreliable or nonexistent — especially during emergencies (natural disasters, power outages). Mesh networks — where each node can relay messages — offer resilience and flexibility. By building solar-powered nodes, we eliminate dependence on mains power and allow deployment in remote and off-grid locations. The NiceRa design is compact, efficient, and well suited for this purpose (NRF52 + SX1262 radio). The workshop empowers participants not just to build hardware, but to understand how to deploy and manage resilient communication networks — creating real-world impact. Signals Rising provides education and support to the public around radio and other communication technologies. We also provide funding for projects to facilitate growth of the amateur radio community. Signals Rising provides funding and educational resources to underserved individuals and communities to receive radio licensing and equipment. We also sponsor research projects to expand the field of amateur radio communication. All solar nodes built will be distributed to the many communities that have put in requests for assistance in setting up meshtastic systems in their regions.
