Sam Knowlton • @samdknowlton The one aspect about this that isn't discussed enough is how human feces are getting onto our crops and remaining there through the point of consumption. Municipal sludge (treated sewage) is spread on ~70 million acres of agricultural land. EPA mandates require testing for some heavy metals and pathogen reduction in the treatment process. What is not required is testing for protozoa spores like Cyclospora (the cause of the current outbreak). Irrigation water is another potential source of contamination, especially surface water which is most common in outdoor vegetable and fruit production. The FDA recently replaced a longstanding rule that established a standard numeric microbial quality criteria and mandatory testing for pre harvest agricultural. Farms now evaluate their own water systems. The standard it replaced relied on generic E. coli as the indicator of fecal contamination. E. coli is a bacterium that dies off relatively quickly outdoors. Cyclospora is a protozoan that survives chlorination and persists for weeks.
