Statement from Secretary Amore: Dr. Gordon Wood was a renowned scholar and lecturer, whose expertise and historical perspective on the American Revolution continues to influence and inform how we view this history today. I had the honor of listening to him lecture on more than one occasion, and I was beyond impressed by his intelligence and commitment to preserving our state and nation's history. Beyond that, I know he was beloved by his family and a cherished member of the Brown University community.   I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing and I know he will be sorely missed.

Graphic with Secretary of State Gregg Amore logo and text: Since 2013, through a series of federal court decisions, the protections of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 have been diminished. The federal Voting Rights Act has fulfilled the promise of the 15th Amendment. It has protected the rights of voters regardless of race and provided recourse in the event of racial gerrymandering, which is foundational to the American democracy we know today. Without these protections, vote dilution is a critical threat to the equal representation of voters of all races and backgrounds. Over the past several months, I’ve often been asked why a Rhode Island Voting Rights Act is so essential. Voters are confident in the security and accessibility of our elections – as they should be. But attacks like today’s decision are precisely why a Voting Rights Act is needed in our state. The right to vote must be protected and I remain committed to advocating for those protections to be codified into Rhode Island law and fighting on behalf of voters whose voices have historically been silenced.
