A 1902 casting of Anne Whitney's sculpture of abolitionist Charles Sumner, sculpted in 1875 as the winning entry for a competition to commemorate him after his death. She won, but after finding out she was a woman, the Boston Art Committee went with a male sculptor's option for a statue in Boston instead. Scans of an 1890s collectible cigarette card, from a series of 50 cycling themed ones from the brand 'Player's Cigarettes.' The art, titled Companion Safety Bicycle, depicts a bike with two wheels and two riders seated side by side, unlike a regular tandem bicycle. Their steering handlebars are both connected to the same wheel. It seems like it would be humorously difficult to balance and control. The backside has description text, saying it was an 1896 bike that was no more than a novelty, along the lines of 1880s tricycles that would be the same but stable, not actually useful like a tandem bike. And then describes a similar variant with 1 set of handlebars so that the rider would be free to practice sharpshooting while pedalling along.
