President Trump threatened to impose 200% tariffs on alcohol from the European Union, one day after the EU said it planned 50% import taxes on U.S. whiskey and other products from April 1, in retaliation for steel and aluminum levies. “If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all WINES, CHAMPAGNES, & ALCOHOLIC PRODUCTS COMING OUT OF FRANCE AND OTHER E.U. REPRESENTED COUNTRIES,” Trump said Thursday on social media. “This will be great for the Wine and Champagne businesses in the U.S.” Shares in European drinks companies sold off after Trump's threat.
