This image was not used in the original impression of The Hobbit, 1937, which included no coloured illustrations, this painting appeared in the second English impression of the same year and in the first American edition, 1938. In the American edition the title and the J.R.R.T. monogram were obliterated; but both reproductions carried the printed caption 'O Smaug the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities' (Bilbo's words to the Dragon, Chapter 12, "Inside Information"). The painting was reproduced in The J.R.R. Tolkien Calendar 1973 and 1974, and in The Hobbit Calendar 1976.

The peculiar galaxy Centaurus A (NGC 5128) is pictured in this image taken with the Wide Field Imager attached to the MPG/ESO 2.2-metre telescope at the La Silla Observatory in Chile. With a total exposure time of more than 50 hours this is probably the deepest view of this peculiar and spectacular object ever created.

Snowmen in various states of disassembly in a snow covered park. One holds it's own surprised head looking at its standing body. Another is buried up to it's carrot nose in the snow, it's stick arms raised above the undisturbed white. Yet another is laying down looking up into the sky, stick arms outstretched and a mature tree trunk thrust from it's chest to the sky. NASA's New Horizons spacecraft captured this high-resolution enhanced color view of Pluto on 14 July 2015. The image combines blue, red and infrared images taken by the Ralph/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVIC). Pluto's surface sports a remarkable range of subtle colors, enhanced in this view to a rainbow of pale blues, yellows, oranges, and deep reds. Many landforms have their own distinct colors, telling a complex geological and climatological story that scientists have only just begun to decode.

The first publicly released image from VISTA, the world’s largest survey telescope, reveals the Flame Nebula, or NGC 2024, in the constellation of Orion. An area of intense star formation, the core of the nebula is hidden behind obscuring dust, but with VISTA’s infrared view, the cluster of young stars at the object’s heart is revealed. Also visible are the glow of the reflection nebula NGC 2023, just below centre, and the ghostly outline of the Horsehead Nebula to the lower right.

Lavender, violet, pink, rose, and gold hues streak and bubble in a clouded sky, framed on either side and the bottom with silhouetted jags of conifers.
