Because they aren't that smart. Like wiseass rockers from the Mothers to Sparks, Devo picks easy targets ("Blockhead"), regurgitates slogans and clichés ("Triumph of the Will," for a really choice or rank - example) without thinking much about their meaning, and generally shows contempt and disdain for anyone not as glib as the group is. To say that this critic despises Devo does not go nearly far enough. When I finish typing this, I'm taking a hammer to Duty Now for the Future, lest it corrupt anyone dumb or innocent enough to take it seriously. Shards sent on request.
Veteran avant-garde pianist Cecil Taylor performed his semiimprovisational "Tetra-Stomp: Eatin' Rain in Space" onstage at the sold-out Civic Opera House in Chicago recently, while Mikhail Barysh-nikov and Heather Watts of the New York City Ballet danced a specially choreographed pas de deux to the piece. Taylor and Baryshnikov who personally commissioned the composition may perform it together again in New York this fall. According to Jim Silverman, Taylor's manager, "Cecil's been a ballet fan since he was a kid. His music obviously goes beyond jazz." Elsewhere on the front lines of jazz, Ornette Coleman has re-corded a new album for his own Phrase Text Productions. Titled Fashion Faces, the LP is described as "heavy funk." While waiting for a label deal, Coleman will continue working on an ambitious piece "for world musicians," based on his highly complex harmolodic compositional system.
