I don’t write to be viral. I write to be vital. To remember. To notice. To leave a mark that whispers, “I was here. And I felt this.”
When I reread old pieces, I don’t judge them. I thank them. They were doing the best they could with what I knew.
The smile comes out crooked, but he doesn’t start over. He draws the eyes wide— how hers used to look when she laughed. He’s not sure she laughs like that anymore. But this is the version he wants to remember. The one he still hopes might come back.

Excerpt from my upcoming novel, Holding On: Rachel studied him, her earlier frustration softening into something quieter. She thought of Emma, of the clarity her daughter had offered the night before, and of the unexpected role David had played in it. “You’re doing better,” she said softly, the words surprising her as they left her mouth. David glanced at her, his brow creasing. “Is that your way of saying I’m not completely hopeless?” She rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop a faint smile from forming. “Don’t push it.” David chuckled, the sound brief but genuine. It faded quickly as he rubbed the back of his neck, his gaze dropping to the pavement. “Look, I know I haven’t always been reliable. And I know you’re still mad about yesterday, but I’m trying, Rach. I really am.” Rachel studied him for a long moment, the tension in her chest loosening slightly. “I know,” she said quietly. “And I can see that.”

His shoulders were slightly hunched, his movements deliberate but cautious, as though unsure of how to fit into the room. “Brought coffee,” David said, stepping forward and holding out one of the cups. His tone was light, almost casual, but the tension in his jaw gave him away. Rachel accepted the cup without meeting his eyes. “You’re late,” she said, her voice quieter than she intended, edged with restrained frustration. David gave a half-shrug, his expression tight. “I got held up at work.” Rachel pressed her lips together, biting back the response that rose in her chest. Instead, she nodded toward Ralph. “He’s been asking for you.”
Rachel blinked, feeling the prickle of tears as her mind pulled up a memory of her parents. It was one of her favorites—she’d been perched on the stairs, no more than seven or eight, peering through the banister as they got ready for one of their Dinner & Dance evenings. Lily had been in the living room, already dressed in a sequined gown that caught the light every time she moved. “Come on, Ralph,” she’d said, her voice teasing as she tried to coax him into dance steps. “You’re dancing, not marching!” “I am dancing,” Ralph had replied flatly, his hands stiffly at his sides, his shoulders awkward as he shuffled across the carpet. Lily had laughed, grabbing his hands and pulling him into a turn. “Feel the music!” she’d said. And for a moment—just a moment—Ralph had relaxed. He’d let her lead, his steps loosening, his mouth twitching into something between a smile and a sigh of resignation. They’d swayed together then, Lily leaning into him, her laughter fading into a soft hum of contentment.
Sooo, I got an amazon pakage last night. But I didn't order anything. It is absolutly addressed to me. Inside? A package of tube socks and a large bag of 100 condoms. My first thought was, maybe someone is playing a joke on me? Second thought, maybe this belongs to my ex husband...😆 Or the universe is trying to tell me something?? But what?! 🤣
David sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “I didn’t plan on being late, Rach. I’m here now.” “Just in time to make an appearance,” she muttered, shaking her head. “That’s what you’re good at, isn’t it?” David straightened, his expression darkening. “What’s that supposed to mean?” She finally looked at him, her jaw tight. “It means I’m the one who’s here every day, sitting with them, making the hard decisions. You get to swoop in with coffee and pretend it’s enough.” His face hardened. “You think I don’t care? That it doesn’t hit me every time I walk in here and see them like this?” She stood, her frustration boiling over. “If you cared so much, maybe you’d actually show up when it matters. Instead of leaving me to hold everything together.” “Hold everything together?” David’s voice rose. “You don’t hold things together, Rachel. You smother them. You don’t leave room for anyone else to even try.” Rachel flinched but held her ground. “Because when I do, nothing happens.” David’s hands clenched at his sides. “I don’t need you to make excuses for me. I’m doing the best I can.” Her voice cracked. “Well, maybe your best isn’t good enough.”

Finally, Emma pulled back, her cheeks streaked but her eyes clearer. “Uncle David said it’s okay if I don’t say everything perfectly,” she said hesitantly. “That it’s just about being there.” Rachel swallowed hard, her guilt giving way to a flicker of gratitude. “He’s right,” she said. “And I’m so glad you had him to talk to. But I want you to know you can always come to me too. Even if I don’t say the right thing, I’ll always be here for you.” Emma gave a small nod, a tentative smile tugging at her lips. “Okay.” Rachel brushed a hand over Emma’s hair, pressing a kiss to her forehead. The knot in her chest loosened just a little. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a step forward. And for tonight, that was enough​.

Her mother’s shallow breaths filled the space, each one a fragile tether to the life they were trying so desperately to hold onto. “You’ve always been the strong one,” Ralph said suddenly, his voice soft but steady. “Even your brother admits it—though he’s not one to say it out loud often.” Rachel let out a shaky laugh, blinking back tears. “David thinks I’m bossy, not strong.” “Bossy and strong can go hand in hand, can’t they?” Ralph’s lips curved faintly, his gaze settling on her. “Someone has to take charge. Keep the rest of us in line.” Rachel looked away, her throat tightening. “I don’t feel strong,” she admitted. “I feel like I’m falling apart.” “That’s because you care.” Ralph’s hand, trembling but warm, squeezed hers gently. “And caring doesn’t make you weak—it makes you human.” Rachel closed her eyes, letting his words settle in the quiet. In that moment, she held onto his hand as if it could keep her grounded. For now, just being there was enough.

That I just show up when it’s convenient?” He let out a bitter laugh, shaking his head. “Every time I walk into that room, it feels like I’m failing them. Failing you. I don’t know what to say or do—I never have. So yeah, maybe I stayed away because it’s easier than coming here and being reminded of how useless I am.” His words hung in the air, raw and unfiltered. For a moment, he turned away, his shoulders slumping as he stared out the window. “You’ve always been better at this,” he muttered. “Taking care of people. Holding everything together. I’ve just... never been enough.”
