Field of mustard flowers

Lilac bloom in the autumn with trees in the background.

We walked
one another
through the ruins
of our past loves

detritus of hearts
now overgrown
with moss and regret
old infatuations
reclaimed by
the vines of time
only the crumbling
bricks and stones of
sorrow remaining

as if the remnants
of an ancient
civilization
we admired
them for what
they once were
how they got us
to where
we are now
but left them
to the past
where they
belong
