How is it possible, in such a case, for a story to have meaning? Meaning can only live in specificity. A symbol may mean something only if this symbol, not any other, is chosen, with intention, to carry this meaning, not any other, to be seen or heard or otherwise perceived by another who understands it. It is as in the example, foundational to my own faith, of the word made from toothpicks: if I were to arrange a number of toothpicks on the ground in the shape of any word — “abomination” for example — then that word would exist. It would be. Yet nothing about any of the toothpicks’ essence or nature would change. The difference is solely in the intention and reference that their positions relative to eachother makes to a shared symbology between myself and anyone literate in my language. And yet it would be undeniable that thereupon the floor is the word “abomination.” It would exist. I would have added a meaning to the universe merely by placing toothpicks on the ground. Yet consider: how if I were merely to toss those exact same toothpicks into the air, without any intention, and purely by chance they landed in exactly the same positions as in the previous example? In that case, the result would not be the word “abomination” or indeed any word at all. No intention was involved. No reference was made. The word would not be. And if any walked by, saw the toothpicks, and asked “who wrote the word ‘abomination’ on the floor?” the answer would be “no one,” for in fact no word would have been written at all. What is generative A.I. but such random scattering of toothpicks? With as much abundance of wasteful, consumptive, and polluting complication as possible to disguise its meaninglessness and justify its expense, but at heart it is nothing more than this.

You would have done the same in my place!” “You also swore to spit his heart to the crossguard, did you not?” [REDACTED] said over [REDACTED]’s shoulder. “You know full well I did.” I answered. “Iacob,” [REDACTED]’s grip on his sword tightened. “If you take one step toward me, I will cut the sorcerer down, I swear it.” [REDACTED] laughed. I could hear the hard cold edge in his laugh now, and wondered that I had missed it before. Perhaps it was the unchecked bloodlust roaring through my still body like the cataract from a broken dam, but the vengeful edge made that laugh only the more lovely, the more musical. I felt I could read Ulf’s thoughts in the way his breathing quickened. I knew how he would move an instant before he moved, and brought the tiger-head sword forward. It was beautiful.
