A photograph of the Pelican Air 1637 case that I use to transport my fursuit to furry conventions. The suitcase is black, sitting on a tan carpet on a basement floor. In the middle of the front of the suitcase is a 14"x15" sticker of my fursona Rockk, a grey Dutch Angel Dragon with a light grey muzzle, orange-yellow tinted tufts of spiky head fur, and orange-yellow accent colors on the ear tips. Rockk is looking at you with dark rings around his eyes that don't represent anything but are drawn entirely for artistic effect. The art is my own, which was drawn in the style of the PC game Don't Starve Together. The sticker was printed by a furry, POC owned furry merch business known as Triangle Manor. Ok, so, my brother is on an Amtrak from New England to California, and in the chair next to him is this older gentleman, strong southern accent, says he’s been a farmer his whole life, doesn’t have a phone, asked to borrow my brother’s phone to call Greyhound, because he’d been riding on a Greyhound bus, which had left without him, taking all his baggage with it. The guy looks to be in pretty rough shape. He has the bus tickets, but has no email, no phone, and no home address. He appears to be about 70 years old, and is saying he’s lost everything. He comes across as effectively technologically illiterate. He believes his stuff is all the way up in Boston, and this train is going the opposite direction. It seems like this guy seriously needs some social support. “I was institutionalized” he said, and that he’s afraid because he has no home and because winter is coming. “I just don’t know what to do or where to go, I just get arrested for trespassing.” This makes me wonder. If you’re an unhoused, technologically challenged senior citizen, suffering from mental illness, bad hearing, and bad eyesight, and have nowhere to go, what can someone traveling cross-country, like my brother, do to help ensure this guy’s gonna be ok?
