[Continued from p. 445.] [Upon the reconsideration of this article, we cannot but re- gret, in common with many others who take interest in the discussion, that so much personality should have been introduced into a scientific controversy; and Mr. Mac- Leay's paper having been printed entire for private circu- lation, we have, in acquiescence with the general opinion, omitted, in the continuation which follows, and which will be concluded in the next number, many paragraphs, &c., irrelevant to the subjects discussed. The portions of the paper, therefore, which our readers have now to peruse, must be considered as consisting only of a series of con- nected extracts from the original; containing, however, all the arguments advanced respecting the Dichotomous System. Our opinion of the unfairness of the article in the Quarterly Review, had been expressed (See Phil. Mag. and Annals, N. S. vol. vii. p. 379.) before Mr. Macleay's paper had been received; but what authority our much esteemed friend has for ascribing it to Dr. Fleming, is wholly unknown to us. Articles in favour of the Dichotomous System have repeat- edly appeared in our pages*.—EDITORS.] I DO not know that Dr. Fleming has ever enlightened the world on the construction or anatomy of any one single animal: all he has published of value he has gathered from books. Now that any man, aware as he must be that the little acquaintance he possesses with Natural History he owes entirely to a perusal of the works of Linnæus, Jussieu, and Cuvier, should not have the modesty to distrust himself when differing from them on so essential a point as unity of plan in the creation, is most astonishing.
MY DEAR VIGORS, SOME years have now elapsed since a gentleman, the sable hue of whose vesture, if not the smile on his countenance, betokened that he should be in peace with all men, came up from the North to London, and announced himself to me as the Rev. John Fleming, D.D., Minister of Flisk, N. B. Con- sidering him to be entitled to my services, as being a labourer in the same vineyard with myself, I of course showed him all the attention in my power. In addition to these truly novel specimens of Entomological knowledge, I knew him also by a subsequent compilation, called with much modesty "The Philosophy of Zoology;" the first volume of which contains nothing new but some miser- able plates, and the second, little original except a genus termed Homea, and some names which have been framed in a proper independent spirit, and with a noble contempt of Priscian*. * Thus we have Trochusidæ, Gordiusidæ, and Ptinusidæ; Gyrinedæ, Cicin-deladæ, and Scirtesidæ, cum multis aliis in dæ of similar calibre. Having two Ds tacked to the end of his own name, the worthy minister doubtless thinks that he has a right to clap one to the tail of any thing. On the other hand, there is no end to old friends disguised under such appellations as Thaphozus, Ornithorinchus, or Ophisthocomus, &c.; which might pass for slovenly printing, were they not accompanied by such new words as Aluco, Cistuda, Coriudo, and some hundred of equally classical value. Luckily, however, no great harm is done; for few naturalists place the Doctor's names even in their list of synonyms.

The freed slaves were desperately poor; the poor whites had always been poor except insofar as they were pensioners of the planters. How could industry be set going again and what was the relation of free Negro labor to this industry! Of course, the full realization of freedom could not be accomplished in a minute. Unless crops were raised and the wheels of industry started, emancipation would have been an experiment so costly that no nation could have supported it. And we must remember that in the end and as a logical matter of dollars and cents, emancipation paid. This is so much a matter of common knowledge today that we forget how bitterly and with what absolute certainty the South and even many in the North declared that free Negro labor was economically impossible.

Action is suspended in progress, waiting for the arrival of the unidentified (but inferable) car, and yet everything has already happened.

The eclipse of Thales was a solar eclipse, which was, according to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus (writing about 150 years later), accurately predicted by the Greek philosopher Thales of Miletus. If Herodotus' account is accurate, this eclipse is the earliest recorded as being known in advance of its occurrence. According to Herodotus, the change of day into night was interpreted as an omen, and interrupted a battle in a long-standing war between the Medes and the Lydians in Anatolia (present-day Turkey). The only solar eclipse matching the presumed place, era, and conditions of visibility necessary to explain the historical event is the eclipse of 28 May 585 BC.[a] How exactly Thales could have predicted a solar eclipse remains uncertain, however, and modern scholars are skeptical of the story's veracity. Some have argued for different dates, or for other interpretations of Herodotus's account.

Let us first glance low down to the lowermost shelf of all, which is the widest, too, and but a little space from high-water mark. What outlandish beings are these? He begins by endorsing his interlocutor's low opinion of women's capacity for philosophical thought, citing the Book of Rites in support of the view that "women live within the inner chambers while men wander throughout the world." But as so often happens in Li Zhi's works, the citation is the occasion for a reversal of impli-cations: Li concedes that women are shortsighted (duanjian FE F) - though not essentially but merely because their movements are restricted. In traditional China upper-class women were physically contained within the "inner chambers," rooms in the back of a family home. To Li, this cloistering of women stunts their education and blunts their insight. Women, Li argues, possess the same intellec-tual, moral, and spiritual capacities as men. They merely lack conditions that would enable these abilities to flourish. Written soon after Li Zhi had shaved his head and retreated to the Cloister of the Flourishing Buddha, this letter may reflect the correspondence on scholarly topics that Li began at about this time with a number of female pupils, among them the widowed Mei Danran, daughter of Mei Guozhen (1542-1605), patriarch of one of the most affluent and socially esteemed families in Macheng. Li's relationship with Danran and other female pupils was the pretext invoked to accuse Li of immorality and lewdness, charges that played a part in the burning down of the cloister (1600) and his arrest (1602). Literature - which is art married to thought, and realization untainted by reality - seems to me the end towards which all human effort would have to strive, if it were truly human and not just a welling up of out animal self. To express something is to conserve its virtue and take away its terror. Fields are greener in their description than in their actual greenness. Flowers, if described with phrases that define them in the air of the imagination, will have colours with a durability not found in cellular life. What moves lives. What is said endures. There's nothing in life that's less real for having been well described. Small-minded critics point out that such-and-such poem, with its protracted cadences, in the end says merely that it's a nice day. But to say it's a nice day is difficult, and the nice day itself passes on. It's up to us to conserve the nice day in a wordy, florid memory, sprinkling new flowers and new stars over the fields and skies of the empry, fleeting outer world. Everything is what we are, and everything will be, for those who come after us in the diversity of time, what we will have intensely imagined - what we, that is, by embodying our imagination, will have actually been. The grand, tarnished panorama of History amounts, as I see it, to a flow of interpretations, a confused consensus of unreliable eyewitness accounts. The novelist is all of us, and we narrate whenever we see, because seeing is complex like everything. Right now I have so many fundamental thoughts, so many truly metaphysical things to say that I suddenly feel tired, and I've decided to write no more, think no more. I'll let the fever of saying put me to sleep instead, and with closed eyes I'll stroke as if petting a cat, all that I might have said.

More than ten women who saw him told their parents they'd rather be his concubine than another man's wife. No one ever heard him take the lead; he always simply followed along with others. Since sections are the basic constituents of the anthology, inter-X pretation and discussion of Zhuangzi materials must begin from the level of the individual section. The primary object of interpretation is thus not the anthology as a whole, nor sets of books, nor entire books, but individual sections. Interpretations of groups of sections or of the overall outlook of broad parts of the anthology must be built up from interpretations of individual sections.
So it is said: Fish should not escape the abyss; the state's sharp weapons should not be revealed. The Sage are Under Heaven's sharp weapons, not the means by which to enlighten Under Heaven.
The Sage do not die; big robbers do not cease. If still one weights the Sage and orders Under Heaven, then weightily one profits Robber Zhi. Contrive pecks and bushels to measure him: he'll take pecks and bushels and steal them; Contrive balance-weight and beam to weigh him: he'll take balance-weight and beam and steal them; Contrive tally and seal to trust him: he'll take tally and seal and steal them; Contrive humaneness and propriety to subdue him: he'll take humaneness and propriety and steal them. How do I know it's so? One who steals a belt-hook is executed; One who steals a state becomes a feudal lord. If, within the feudal lord's gate, humaneness and propriety persist, is it not stealing humaneness, propriety, sagacity, and knowing? Thus, he who pursues big robbery, lifts up feudal lords, and steals humaneness and propriety's, alongside peck and bushel's, balance-weight and beam's, and tally and seal's profits- Though you have the reward of coach and cap, you cannot exhort him, the menace of tree-axe and battleaxe, you cannot endure him. This weighting benefitting of Robber Zhi while being unable to endure him- This is the Sage's transgression.
King Hui of Liang said, "I am ready to listen to what you have to say." "Is there any difference," said Mengzi, "between killing a man with a staff and killing him with a knife?" "There is no difference." "Is there any difference between killing him with a knife and killing him with misrule?" "There is no difference." "There is fat meat in your kitchen and there are well-fed horses in your stables, yet the people look hungry and in the outskirts of cities men drop dead from starvation. This is to show animals the way to devour men. Even the devouring of animals by animals is repugnant to men. If, then, one who is father and mother to the people cannot, in ruling over them, avoid showing animals the way to devour men, wherein is he father and mother to the people?"43
Zhu Xi: "Extensive learning"2 refers to all that we ought to learn: the principle of heaven, earth, and the myriad things and the way to cultivate the self and govern others. Still, there's an order to it all. It's appropriate that the big and the urgent come first. Don't be unsystematic or piecemeal. (8.142)
