Dear Bucks Free Press, I disagree with Martin Smith in BFP last week (April 4). The loss of the UK's EU membership is a disastrous destruction of democratic accountability in our politics, not a "restoration". It is about things that are beyond any one country anyway. The UK has been successful at negotiating inside the EU, not a helpless victim. For example, in 2020, the Austrian campaigner Max Schrems got the European Commission's "Privacy Shield Decision" annulled by the EU's upper court. Why? It was because the Decision did not provide enough privacy protections for Europeans against USA companies, such as Facebook. Schrems did it through a government agency in Ireland. Please see: "The CJEU judgment in the Schrems II case" by the European Parliament. Today, there is no way for a British citizen to materially change EU law like that -- because British citizens have lost all of their EU citizenship rights. Martin Smith mentioned fisheries. Does Mr Smith realise that fish move around? For example, mackerel migrate between the seas of Spain and Norway, swimming around the British Isles on the way. How does one country effectively manage fisheries conservation on its own?
