Cranston says she was nor involved, and casts doubt on Cecil's word, causing de Quincy to angrily accuse him of attacking the good name of the de Quincy family.

The second drawing is of the maid handing the chocolates to Mrs Greensleeves. In the next picture, we see Cranston Willobey reading a note. The text shows it says the chocolates were poisoned. Cranston says it's time to make the hunters the hunted.

He laughs, and draws her into his arms, saying she is the only one for him.

Balding man, Cecil de Quincy, who is reading a letter. The text says Jonathan de Quincy is leaving his brother to decide what to do about the wife of their deceased brother. He expects him to confront Cecilia, but instead he is planning for her to be killed as if by accident.

He is making romantic advances to her, which are not well received, as she both threatens to shoot him, and to tell his fearsome ex-pirate girlfriend. She tells him to concentrate on the job at hand. Suddenly, a man, Edmund Cornwallis emerges from the old mine entrance where they are waiting for him. He sees them and runs back into the mine. They start to follow him, but there is a terrible noise, as the roof of the mine collapses on top of him. All the knocking noises fall silent, and the reader is told they must decide if they were made by the impending roof fall, or the pixie-like beings, the knockers, who he had angered.

Edmund Cornwallis is arguing with a Snake and Dagger man, Wallis, who tells him his henchmen Penrose has been apprehended before entering the mine and has told them he was going to set off an explosion in the mine, so it looked as if Cornwallis was caught in a rock fall. This was to give him time to escape. The text shows Cornwallis has run off further into the mine. The second picture shows him climbing a rock pile. Stellan says they will follow behind at a distance, as he knows where Cornwallis is headed.

Stellan tells her Goron has a smuggler girlfriend, a French ex-pirate, who has a crew from the Ivory Coast, as European sailors think it bad luck for a woman to be on board ship. Cecilia retorts the only thing they need to fear is crossing a determined woman.

They are investigating mysterious lights seen on the hillside the night before. The lower picture shows a man at a desk. Behind him, through the window, mine buildings are visible. He is Mr Brighouse, who Mr Cornwallis, another mine owner, has accused of intimidation. Stellan Holmgren and Tobias Smith are visiting him to discreetly gain information. The text shows That one of them, Trmain, is an agent in the mine. He is dressed in working clothes and holding a cap in his hands, and is telling them there is a dangerous atmosphere in the mine, as the miners are unsettled. He feels it is unwise for two of the other men to go underground. The remaining man is the owner of the mine and he is angry that the two men are being prevented from going into the mine, where they are going to look for sabotage. Remaining says superstition is playing a part in the unrest, as the little people of the mines, the knockers, have been silent, which they see as a bad omen. Tobias explains to a bemused Stellan that the knockers are seen as protectors of the mine.
