Doctor Who Adventures – comic strip guidelines 1 The comic strip Doctor Who Adventures has a four-­‐page self-­‐contained comic strip. We’re aiming the magazine at 9-­‐year-­‐old readers, so please make sure that the themes, language and situations are suitable for that age. Each story will be full of thrills, scares, humour and monsters. It should not be too complicated. We want our readers to follow it with ease. The comic strip will take the reader on a quick adventure with the Eleventh Doctor and his companions, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, to new times and places. Generally, the Doctor should be fully involved in the action, although the occasional strip can focus on one or both of his companions. The strip should have a really clear beginning, middle and end too. And we MUST have a monster every week. 2 Pitches Every comic strip for Doctor Who Adventures has to be approved by BBC Wales. Please follow these guidelines to speed up the approval process. • Before going to script, we need to see a pitch, which must be approved by the team at BBC Wales. • Sum up your pitch in a brief sentence at the top of your submission next to your proposed story title. Like the series, part of the success is the simplicity of the core idea -­‐ eg The Doctor meets Churchill, Amy meets the Doctor, London is invaded by aliens. • For the pitch itself, don’t go into too much detail. A couple of lines to summarise what will happen on each of the four pages is fine. • If the pitch is approved, you’ll be commissioned to write the script. 3 The Script We can go anywhere, so go for it. The past, present, future… other worlds even. You can create a world that would be the most expensive idea to realise on screen. But don’t be afraid of using a contemporary Earth setting either, using settings and situations that will be familiar to our readers.
BUDDY'S SONG • ••(12)•• Ageing rocker Roger Daltrey stars as Terry, a decrepit Teddy Boy, whose lack of brain cells and fondness for *50s drapes etc. is a constant embarrassment to his son Buddy (the not-entirely-ugly Chesney Hawkes.) The plot follows the relationship between Terry and his family as Terry winds up in prison, Buddy tries to become a pop star, and his Mum has an affair with her boss. There are one or two "comic" moments, but - oh dear! - it's so very slushy and cringesome (and unlikely), that you begin to hope that there's some tragic twist of fate at the end. No such luck.
