My comment in response to the FCC filing. It reads “The very first lines of the Constitution of the United States assert that it is a document which means to uphold above all else an individuals inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It does not, however, indicate that the life, liberty and happiness of one specific in-group ought to be upheld over another. That is precisely what placing content warnings on material portraying LGBTQ+ individuals and materials would amount to - a protection of the fragile sensibilities of bigots who wish to maintain a bubble around themselves that paints a comfortable illusion of the reality they wish would exist, elevating this desire above the very real need for American media to portray objective reality and our society as it exists. Gay, trans, and gender queer individuals have been present in America long before European colonization, and content which reflects this reality is not in any way harmful to the American people. There is no reason to place content warnings in regards to such material beyond exhibiting an obsessive need on the part of the federal government to control the lives of the American people and demand that they conform to the government’s vision of what is morally right and wrong, by suggesting that LGBTQ+ content is somehow dangerous or objectionable. This is a blatant violation of our inalienable rights, specifically the first amendment right to free and protected speech. Those who suggest that it is necessary should be ashamed of themselves.”
