I have been trying to get this bird from my apartment list for weeks (technically years) but have failed. I figured today would be my shot after michael reported it flying over Green-Wood, but after an hour searching I couldn't locate it, and had to leave for an appointment at 2. At 4:33 i returned to the 25th street R station, came out of the subway and looked up and the bird was basically right over me - long and pointy-winged buteo with a slight dihedral, brownish hood, and mostly unmarked pale rusty belly. I laughed and shouted "F%#! you," which is probably the first time anyone has said that while looking at this specific bird. I snapped an iphone photo and sprinted home, and after just a quick scan caught the bird over the mouth of the gowanus canal. i watched it drift as far south as 28 st and as far north as carroll gardens, centered around the red hook grain terminal. doug g. called me and we watched the bird together, triangulating its position. bird interacted with a red-tailed hawk and a fish crow but mostly just hovered around. a few times it approached an exhaust tower from a plant in red hook and used the thermal to blast high up into the air. bird spent basically an hour hovering around that area.
