comment from reddit r/rails: You are abstracting over two different elements that mean two different things. A link is navigation. A button is an action. If the gated thing is “go to this URL when allowed, otherwise show paywall,” the clean Rails and Stimulus way is usually still to render a link, and let the gating behavior decide whether to allow navigation or intercept it with preventDefault(). You shouldn't be determining UI functionality based on the existence of data attributes. That seems like a very big anti pattern in rails. But honestly, the top comment is the correct rails convention. Have controller handle the rendering of modal or redirect. No need to do this on the front end. If you need to pass in data on click, use a form
