Zin stared at the still-smoking hole in the library wall, one hand fastened to her hip, right where the wide belt met the black herringbone wool. “Filius canis,” she hissed under her breath. Son of a bitch. Had she been human, those words would have brought forth a plume of condensation from her lips, ascending into the frigid night air. But her humanity had been long since lost, so the air remained still as an undisturbed grave. She stepped over a small pile of burned ash, the toe of her black patent leather shoe smudged from the spent embers. “Merde. Porco miseria.” She’d always preferred swearing in other languages. English was a strange, cobbled language, even if she’d spent plenty of time speaking it, expletives never felt natural. None, that is, except one. “Goddamn it.”
