Yaetherim's backstory came first. He was originally the 'victim of the week' in the first book, a fairy who'd just survived a murder attempt. Then as I wrote, I realised the story worked better if he was the investigator too. Hence the scars and patch on his wing. (Art by Pamonyaart.)
