When he was 16, Michele was an exceptionally bright boy, passionate about computer science, sports, the mountains and caving. Above all, he was—and still is—a deeply kind and generous person.
On 8 November 2019, after a serious fall, Michele suffered a diffuse axonal brain injury, which resulted in spastic tetraparesis. In the first days, his life was in danger. His vital functions slowly stabilised, but he remained in a coma for four and a half months. As soon as his condition allowed, we transferred him to the Casa dei Risvegli in Bologna, a leading rehabilitation centre within Bellaria Hospital.
After this hospitalisation, Michele returned home and began an intensive and demanding rehabilitation programme, both in specialised centres and at home. Over the years, there have been physical and cognitive improvements. However, his condition remains one of severe disability and near-total dependence on his caregivers.
Today, Michele cannot speak effectively and mainly communicates through a tablet. He cannot walk and has only partial control of his upper limbs. His short-term memory is very fragile, although he vividly remembers his life before the accident.
