This is what I wanted to find when starting Steam Roulette. These gems hidden in my catalog that I may never have gotten to. Tom Cavenaugh (Super Hexagon, Dicey Dungeons) and Bennett Foddy (Getting Over It) created this together and they have the juice. The controls are flawless, very tough platforming, instant respawn, clever puzzles, and fun exploration. Easily the best so far and I’m more excited than ever to keep digging through my library.
Antechamber is a puzzle game where you use perspective and color to make it through different rooms that are all connected. It’s got a cheeky humor similar to Portal as well. I had played this game before so I knew what I was getting into, but it is still fun trying to solve how to move on in the game. Sometimes the hints the room gives lies or is worded in a way that tricks you. There is also a time limit of 1 hour and 30 minutes that you have to complete the game in or you start over. If I had played this for the first time for Steam Roulette, I’d probably be more enamored with it, but the idea does wear a little thin after one play through.
Enemy Mind is a shoot ‘em up with a twist: you can warp inside an enemy ship and take over. Your ammo depletes quickly and your ship cannot take much damage so you will be swapping ships a lot. The game is wave based inside of larger levels. There’s at least 6 waves per level with a “swarm” on the final which is where the action turns into what I think of as shoot ‘em up/ bullet hell formula. There is a story of a pilot who is getting memories from the ships she is warping into and cannot distinguish what memories are hers and what memories are from the ships. The story is far more interesting than I expected from a game of this type. Overall, it’s not a genre I usually enjoy too much of, but I found some fun here. I may return to it one to get some more achievements.
This game is a delisted Choose Your Own Adventure game (or game book as fans of DnD call it) in the Warhammer universe with a text based battle system that happens occasionally. It’s not bad for this genre, but it’s very barebones. It’s 90 percent text only with small images of people, monsters, and weapons. There’s really no visual novel quality to it which is what I was hoping for. I did a single run and got my fill pretty quickly. I am planning to play these Roulette games for longer than I played this one, but I got the hook of this one quickly and didn’t love it.
