He was nothing, he remembered, and the Ascian could throw him around like nothing. They may both be wearing phantom bodies, but his own was still… Before Ardbert could finish his own thought, he felt his right fist connect with Emet-Selch’s cheek.

This pale imitation’s stubborn subsistence, its chances of survival? My certain, inevitable defeat…?” “I am warning you, Hades!” Yisu reached into his coat again. Emet-Selch disappeared from where he lay, only wisps of darkness left in his place. Yisu felt fear in his blood, slowing time and speeding his thoughts. Something was very, very wrong. He had not the auracite nor the means to focus his light, he was well and truly alone, and if Emet-Selch meant now to kill him, he would be made useful ere he died. My sword, Yisu panicked, reaching blindly for it, slipping in his panic— “Your ultimate triumph.” Emet-Selch’s voice was a whisper at his ear. Yisu could hear him smiling. “To destroy every last perfect vestige of the world you once loved...”
