(truncated to fit character limits for alt text) As a worker myself, I understand all too deeply the power dynamics at play between corporations and employees. Individual employees often struggle to have their voices and concerns heard by giant corporations and find themselves consistently drawing the shorter stick in negotiations with their employers. Strong and effective unions shift that power balance and allow workers who would otherwise be disenfranchised a fair voice at the bargaining table. But that doesn’t work when governments interfere with the bargaining process, such as by forcing the parties into binding arbitration. Not only does that deny workers their right to fairly negotiate, but it also sends a clear signal to other corporations: you don’t need to negotiate in good faith; if you drag the negotiations on long enough, the government will force your employees back to work. I appreciate the Honorable Labor Minister Steven MacKinnon’s remarks on Wednesday assuring reporters that forced binding arbitration is not on the table. I encourage the Liberals to stand by this even if it gets more challenging to do so as the strike drags on. This strike is undoubtedly causing a great deal of inconvenience and economic harm to Canadians across the country and in Toronto Center—indeed, I’m one of the people impacted by it. It’s tempting to blame this on the workers. That’s also the narrative most of our (American corporate owned) media wants to push. Let’s remember that Canada Post Corporation can bring an end to this strike at once simply by accepting the offer put forward by the union, or even just by coming to the bargaining table in good faith with a desire to resolve the matter. I trust the Liberals will do the right thing and stand in solidarity with postal workers fighting for better conditions, and consequently, all workers throughout the country.
I understand that a recent announcement was made that a Kanata South location was being considered for the potential establishment of a welcoming centre for asylum seekers/refugees coming to Canada. I spoke with Councillors Curry and Hubley and then with Mayor Sutcliffe. The councillors and I all stressed to the Mayor that more open information and consultation was needed, especially in the affected neighbourhoods. Everyone agreed. Some clarifications are needed here. 1 LIE: A welcome centre will lead to an increase in local crime. This is NOT true. There has been no increase in crime in the vicinity of Ottawa’s other temporary sites for hosting newcomers. This LIE has been shared in order to make people afraid. There is no need to be afraid. 2 LIE: The site will be used for other unhoused populations. This is NOT true. The City has applied to the Federal Government for funding for a welcoming centre to receive newcomers and prepare them for the next stage in their Canadian experience. A welcoming centre will free up space in our homeless shelter system. It has been the only place for newcomers to go. 3 LIE: A sprung shelter is a tent. This is NOT true. A sprung shelter is a prefabricated quick assembly building. It is NOT a tent and people who suggest that this is a tent are wilfully trying to confuse and scare people. 4 A very comprehensive site search was conducted by City staff. Ottawa have surrendered their community and recreation centres to help newcomers. The City is trying to avoid that in the future. This is a much longer-term process, with formalized opportunities for information-sharing and consultation.
