The left's burning desire for a muscleman of their own isn't just a masculinity problem. Yes, the curdling of the American man is clearly affecting all men, regardless of whether they're watching Joe Rogan or Hasan Piker. But the desperation to defend Platner also comes from a bizarre contradiction that has emerged on the left since Trump entered office. There is a deeply-rooted sneering, condescending inability to imagine that working people - and working class men, who always are assumed to be white in these instances - could ever vote for anyone other than a slovenly, alcoholic townie oaf. And there is a borderline pathological insistence that policies like free healthcare, antitrust regulation, student debt relief, and a rebuke of Israel's genocide in Palestine, if shouted by a white guy in his pickup truck, could somehow, magically fix the social and racial and religious divides that have opened up into yawning chasms during the Trump era. The same leftists cheering for the DSA upset in New York last month - which was led almost entirely by women of color - are completely unable to imagine that anything like that could work in the small town America populated by noble savages they imagine in their heads. Platner, for all his unending messiness, was the easy way out. The choice that meant your favorite podcaster could be anti-Trump, but didn't have to sound "woke," or feminine, or whatever.
I stand by my previous defense of Platner. Offensive tattoos and sexting-out-of-wedlock struck me as the most Marine shit ever. I literally know Marines who've done both but later grew up and became decent guys. (Hi if you're reading this!) | still believe in my bones that people like that deserve to have a shot at public office and that our country would be better for it. But the Marines I'm describing were never accused of more serious things like sexual assault. People were right to give him a chance before; and they're right to drop him now. "But there were so many red flags," the argument goes, pointing to the sexting, tattoo, and Reddit posts. Think about that argument for a moment: it means that people should be disqualified from public office for things there isn't evidence they actually did, just "red flags" from which they can supposedly be divined. Ruling out anyone with Reddit post-level flaws bars millions of otherwise decent people from politics. The only people left are the exact kind of squeaky-clean, Mckinsey consultant politicians that was the entire point of my Platner article in the first place.

I really don’t think that Donald Trump doesn’t care about civilian casualties. Sir, you’re a very, very smart guy. You don’t think Donald Trump actually cares about casualties, do you? Look, I actually do, O.K.? In his first Administration, in 2019, when he turned back the bombers from hitting Iran, I think he did that because I do think he genuinely cares about human life. Lutie Stearns: Self-styled Radical "I've been called 'a radical' and 'a communist,'" Stearns once com mented, "but I recall that Susan B. Anthony was termed 'an old hen' and Jane Addams was designated ... as 'the most dangerous person in America,' so I'm in good company."1 Radical was how Stearns defined herself and how she wanted to be remembered. In the series of interviews given at the age of seventy-five that formed the basis for her published autobiography, she asserted, "I am numbered among the radicals, as I agree . . . that 'a liberal is a man who has just left the room when the fighting begins!'" One of the ways Stearns expressed her radicalism was through feminism. A long-standing and active member of the Wisconsin woman's club and suffrage movements, she took pleasure in making unconventional statements. In 1904, as a fund-raiser for the Milwau kee Children's Free Hospital, she compiled a bibliography entitled Books of Interest and Consolation to Spinsters, framing her recommen dations by what she considered to be appropriate aphorisms. "What is man," she demanded, "that we should be mindful of him?" And at the end of this book she maintained, "I'd rather not be married and be sorry I wasn't, than be married and be sorry I was," and finally, "PUNCH'S advice to those about to marry-DON'T!" This quote has always stuck in my head. This guy, Ignazio Silone, was a writer about Italian fascism. He wrote a book called “The School for Dictators.” His line is, “Fascism is a counter-revolution against a revolution that never took place.” This is, I think, crucial. What he identified among the rise of Mussolini and Italian fascists is they came online warning that the left in Italy, the communists and the homos and all that, all the usual, were right on the verge of taking over Italy and fundamentally changing Italy’s core character and its historical traditions. They were right on the verge. Only fascist violence could prevent that from happening. Only fascist violence could prevent the imminent takeover of the left. Once you see that pattern, you start to notice that the way the far fascist right succeeds — and you’ve seen this run over and over again throughout the 20th and 21st century — is that the right convinces the center that the left is the biggest threat. The center spends its time fighting and yelling at the left while the right waltzes in and sets up fascism. That’s what happened in the 20th century over and over again.
The other side: Seattle Police Officers Guild president Mike Solan said he does not intend to let union members do any of this. "Toothless virtue signaling rhetoric like this has already cost two people their lives," wrote Solan. "The concept of pitting two armed law enforcement agencies against each other is ludicrous, and will not happen. I will not allow SPOG members to be used as political pawns." The push for local police assistance comes just days after the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Minneapolis.
“The guy is too healthy,” Marco Rubio said in an interview at the White House. “He’s too active.” Rubio — who in addition to running the State Department is the acting national security adviser and acting archivist of the U.S. — may be one of the busiest men in Washington. On the day I met with him, he was running behind schedule to get to a Capitol Hill briefing with top lawmakers. Still, he took time out of his day to regale me with stories about the president’s “unparalleled” memory and attention to detail. Once, Trump noticed that Rubio’s shoes looked “shitty,” so at a later meeting, the president presented him with a gift: a signed shoebox containing a pair of size 12s. “I have them on, and they’re perfect,” Rubio said, pointing to his shiny black dress shoes. Another time, Trump perceived that the chandeliers in the State Department were missing medallions, the ornamental discs installed on the ceiling. A few days later, Trump called Rubio into his office with dozens of medallion samples. “I don’t even know how many I need,” Rubio recalled telling Trump. “He said, ‘I think you need 12,’ and sure enough …” Rubio shook his head in awe. “I try to match it as much as I can. It’s just not natural to me.”

Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!
Some defensiveness about the data on vaccine-related harms is understandable. Anti-vaccine activists, the HHS secretary among them, have spent years stoking unfounded fears about mRNA vaccines; doing so has almost certainly resulted in otherwise preventable deaths among those who refused to get vaccinated. And it may well be that this administration’s claims about the harms from COVID shots are unfounded, and that no persuasive evidence will ever be provided. (The FDA has indicated that supporting data will be released later this month.) But given what is already known, the public-health establishment should be prepared for the alternative. Accepting and acknowledging reasonable proof of that reality would be an important part of effectively combatting the government’s current vaccine skepticism. How can medical professionals discuss the favorable risk-benefit profile of these shots if they aren’t willing to acknowledge their worst risk? Denial also creates opportunities for those who want to break the system to rebuild it. In his memo, Prasad presents a very small number of allegedly catastrophic events as a revelation of such grave importance that “swift action” must be taken in regard to the COVID vaccines and the immunization approval process overall.

Collins’s fiction inevitably echoes other dystopian literature in which states subject their citizens to novel forms of oppression, like George Orwell’s “1984” or Margaret Atwood’s “Handmaid’s Tale.” Even more pronounced are the similarities between “The Hunger Games” and “Battle Royale,” a Japanese novel published in 1999. Each book involves young people selected at random and pitted against one another in a game of survival staged by tyrannical authorities. The parallels are striking enough that Collins’s work has been savaged on the blogosphere as a baldfaced ripoff. The authors share an interest in the mechanisms of state control, but their agendas clearly diverge. “Battle Royale” is a more deliberate study of adolescence, its coming-of-age savageries and posturings. “You’ve become quite a stud,” a dying girl tells the classmate who cradles her in his arms. When it was published, “Battle Royale” played into Japan’s fears about a rise in youth violence; Collins’s heroes are, if anything, models of responsibility. When I asked Collins if she had drawn from “Battle Royale,” she was unperturbed. “I had never heard of that book or that author until my book was turned in. At that point, it was mentioned to me, and I asked my editor if I should read it. He said: ‘No, I don’t want that world in your head. Just continue with what you’re doing.’ ” She has yet to read the book or to see the movie.
He wasn’t the only Five Nights at Freddy’s actor insulted by Tarantino. During the same podcast, the director said The Hunger Games series “ripped off” the Japanese novel Battle Royale. “I do not understand how the Japanese writer didn’t sue Suzanne Collins for every fucking thing she owns,” Tarantino stated. “They just ripped off the fucking book! Stupid book critics are not going to go watch a Japanese movie called Battle Royale, so the stupid book critics never called her out on it.” Josh Hutcherson, who starred as Peeta in THG, told Variety, “There are similar themes, for sure. But, you know, everyone borrows from everyone.” Hot tip for Quentin: do not go into any haunted pizzerias for the time being, especially if they have animatronics. Those robots have a tendency to seek revenge.
And then he came for cult classic actors. In addition to insulting Paul Dano this week on a podcast, Quentin Tarantino also shared his distaste for beloved horror actor Matthew Lillard. On an episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, Tarantino said he didn’t “care for” Lillard and Owen Wilson as actors, seemingly throwing in the Five Nights at Freddy’s star’s name in for no reason.
