From Lisboa manuelina e a formação de modelos urbanísticos da época moderna (1495-1521) by Helder Carita (in Portuguese): Se as igrejas ocupavam, durante o século XIII, o lugar primordial como elemento de referência espacial—a grande maioria das localizações de casas era feita pela igreja, mesmo sem ser freguesia—a partir do século XIV outros elementos começam a adquirir capacidade de constituírem marcos de referência para a localização duma morada, como... "ás Portas de Ferro, ao chaão de Alcamim, ha Pedreira, ha regueira, ha ponte de Galonha." A localização duma casa era realizada, assim, pela proximidade de um outro local identificável e não pela referência a uma rua. Quando à especificação dos limites físicos duma propriedade, a sua análise revela-se particularmente significativa. Se as quatro frentes da propriedade são estabelecidas em função dos pontos cardeais, estes não são nomeados como norte, sul, este, oeste, mas por referências passíveis duma experiência sensorial. Se este e oeste aparecem como levante e poente ou oriente e ocidente, o norte é nomeado como "aguião", que significa o vento que sopra de norte. Da mesma forma, o sul é referenciado como "abrego ou avrego" que significa o vento sul. Em documentos dos séculos XII e XIII o sul surge, ainda, nomeado como "...in africa...", "...ad africum...", "...affricum...", o que traduz uma forma ainda mais coisificada e menos abstrata de se relacionar com o espaço e a realidade.
