What this reminds me of is Takamatsu. JR Takamatsu Station is a terminal, that connects directly to the ferry terminal, which used to be the easiest way to get to the island of Shikoku Ferries aren't as relevant now that the Great Seto Bridge (1988) and Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (1998) exist

An interesting coincidence that might not be a coincidence is how Kurashiki, on the other side of the Seto Bridge, used to have Tivoli Japan, a theme park modeled after Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens
