This queen butterfly (Danaus gilippus) is a North and South American butterfly in the family Nymphalidae with a wingspan of 80–85 mm (3+1⁄8–3+3⁄8 in).[3] It is orange with black wing borders and small white forewing spots on its dorsal wing surface, and reddish ventral wing surface fairly similar to the dorsal surface. The ventral hindwings have black veins and small white spots in a black border. The male has a black androconial scent patch on its dorsal hindwings.[4] It can be found in meadows, fields, marshes, deserts, and at the edges of forests. This male is resting on a patch of pale green Horsetail Milkweed… thin feathery leaves on long thin streak with flat clusters of small white blossoms

Video of first major rain in many months in Deming NM. Winds from the north - heavy. Pea sized sleet and lots of water. The sky is heavily clouded, trees leaning away from the wind, drive is flooding with several inches of rain.
Coco. A black and tan mixed breed dog; part American Pit Terrier; Heeler and Shepherd - relaxing on his bed…his head rests on his right paw. His ears are raised and he is giving you ‘puppy-dog eyes’.

Northern Walking Stick insect. This insect looks like a piece of dry tan straw. It is clinging to a piece of cedar fence with its two right legs, and clinging to a piece of metal wire with its two left legs.

Two wooden folding camping rocking chairs of pale wood sit on either side of a vintage metal round table with glass top under a very old non-bearing mulberry tree. Two tin punched cans with lighted beeswax candles cast a golden glow upon the rough bark of the trunk and lower branches and reflect from the undersides of the deep green leaves. The ground beneath the tree is littered with last seasons leaf debris and gravel of greys and browns. Some new green growth is starting to show among the gravel.

Cocoa. A mixed breed 60 pound rescue from an illegal dog fight circuit. DNA tests show Aussie Cattle-dog, Malinois and German Shepherd. His coat is short, semi stiff black, brown, caramel with a white throat. His eyes are milk chocolate brown. He only rarely barks due to a throat injury from a fight. But when he does bark he is terrifying. He loves to cuddle and thinks he is a chihuahua. He has no concept of his size and scares himself when he sees himself in a mirror. We love him.
A branch of a two year old apple tree planted in our high desert yard. Clusters of five blooms surrounded by a collar of leaves open from top to branch base in daily progression. Their gentle fragrance feels cleansing.
Lemon yellow Dessert Primrose. Four separate heart shaped petals on a three inch stem growing from ground hugging arrow shaped foliage of dandelion green. Plant has two open blooms and the buds still to bloom. It is growing up through gravel of tans, browns, clay-reds. Dried grasses from last summer are arrayed around the primrose.

From Deming NM (southwesternNM) in lower contiguous 48 of North America. The very last of my garden harvest 2025/2026. All picked February 14/26. In the center Sweet Anaheim peppers surrounded by: From bottom left clockwise: Heirloom Red tomatoes; mini Black Beauty peppers; more tomatoes and some green Bell papers; a large Black Beauty pepper (at 2:00) and one last green Bell at 4:00ish. While we have had some frosts between 2-5am, the days have been in 50s-70s. I can not say we have had winter in southern New Mexico so far and we’re midway through February. This makes me nervous even while I enjoyed the very last harvesting.

This was January 12 and the tree still has its leaves. They are all fallen now (February 12) but I’ve got bugs showing on my fruit trees! This is not normal.

A small sample of butter sugar cookies were made this evening. I made the cookie-cutter flowers (?) and John made Spritz wreath cookies with a cookie press he found at the thrift store. We flavored them with vanilla and almond. Tomorrow we’re going to try orange and lemon while the turkey cooks in the smoker.

This is a photo of the tower on the left half of the screen with one dark window in the upper third. The background is the craggy Florí’das range with Venus rising in the west. The golden glow of the farolitos begs you to follow their light along the parks desert paths. Magical!

The full moon on December 4 2025. Rising above the northeast ‘tail’ of the Florí’das range east of Deming New Mexico. The last of the prairie grasses are drying but will be green again (hopefully) in the spring after a time of dormancy and a little winter snow. A sign of hope, a period of hardship leading to a time of healing and new growth.
Dark blue, grey, teal storm clouds over crisped golden pasture grasses and fading green mesquite shrubs. Immediate center of shot is a prism of color beginning with violet at the horizon and graduating up and right through blue, teal, green, yellow, tangerine and red. There is a little oriole on the ground (bottom right edge of left vertical third) but he looked like a speck - perhaps mesmerized by the carnival of colors.

A marmalade male cat sitting on the branch of the ancient tree in the courtyard/patio of the room we stayed in at an historic inn/gallery in Las Cruces. The tree bark is almost black with age and very roughly textured. The leaves of pale green make a nice backdrop for this chubby handsome fellow. He has a distinct M above and between his golden eyes. He is watching me have my morning coffee. His expression is very intelligent and friendly.

Remembering Matriarch Water Protector Ladonna Brave Bull Allard (June 8, 1956 – April 10, 2021), known as Tamakawastewin ("Good Earth Woman") was a Dakota and Lakota historian, genealogist who lended her voice, energy, knowledge and land to others fighting against the Dakota access pipeline.
