Lauris and Yolanda’s case lays bare the deadly consequences of institutional failures. Despite repeated pleas for help, evidence of stalking, and escalating risk, Lauris was failed by the very systems meant to protect her. As the coroner ruled, Yolanda’s unlawful killing could have been prevented had the Metropolitan Police taken Lauris’s domestic abuse case seriously. This is not an isolated tragedy. Black, minoritised and migrant women are too often treated as less credible, less deserving of protection, and left navigating policing and safeguarding systems shaped by structural discrimination.

We are deeply alarmed by the immigration measures announced in today's King's Speech, which risk further endangering some of the most vulnerable people in the UK, including those fleeing all forms of violence against women & girls and modern slavery. The proposed Immigration and Asylum Bill – which would make it easier to revoke refugee status and restrict support for people seeking asylum – threatens to push already traumatised individuals into destitution, homelessness, and further abuse. These measures will disproportionately harm migrant and refugee women; many of whom already face severe barriers to safety because of their immigration status and the hostile environment.

The impact is clear. Funding decisions are prioritising larger, generic providers, while specialist services supporting Black, minoritised and migrant women, particularly those with No Recourse to Public Funds, are deprioritised. This leaves women without access to the support they trust and urgently need.
‘By and for’ services are 6 times less likely to receive statutory funding, despite supporting over 129,000 victim-survivors each year while operating at a 39% funding shortfall.
