While I might alter a detail here and there, I have not been shaken in my main conclusions of a decade ago. At Vichy, a coalition of the losers and victims of the Third French Republic seized the opportunity offered by defeat in 1940 to try to impose their vision of France on a population that was, at least at first, willing if not enthusiastic partners in a "national revolution." These efforts left legacies in post-war French politics, society, economy, and even foreign policy. My view of Marshal Pétain and his regime remains fundamentally critical. But an American who looks honestly at collaborationist France must judge not only with sorrow and pity, but with fear of what his own countrymen might do under equivalent stress.
