That's Spanish for you. I once met a man from Paraguay whose English ancestors were named "Hill." So of course when they settled in Paraguay the spelling was changed to "Gill."

If anyone's interested, it's Spanish in origin. "G" before "I" in Spanish is pronounced similar to the English "H" sound. The GM gets its name from the Gila River area where the GM was common, and "Gila" was the Spanish explorers' version of the river's native name (which starts with an "H" sound).
